The appearance of your smile is one of the first things that other people will notice about you. A beautiful, healthy-looking smile is the first impressions that you give out, so it is beneficial to ensure that your smile is as appealing as it can possibly be.
Veneers are a cosmetic treatment. It is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail.
These custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials are designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their colour, shape, size, or length.
A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten your front teeth.
If you are concerned about misshapen, chipped or discoloured teeth, veneers can offer a long-lasting cosmetic solution.
Dental Veneers Patient – Mary's Success Story
“My front teeth were separating as I got older, it seemed like the gap in the centre got wider and I was worried about it. So I came to see David here at this clinic to see what he could do about it and now my problem was I’m terrified of dentists, absolutely terrified and didn’t want to come and if the gap wasn’t there ruining my smile, I probably would never have come. Since having the treatment, I don’t cover my mouth anymore when I speak, and I feel good.
You know I’m getting old now and every little helps, especially once your teeth are fine, everything else comes together, I think.
If somebody wanted to have treatment at the practice, I’d say go for it! Come and have a chat in the first instance and you will feel so comfortable immediately, that you will be quite happy.
There isn’t any pressure to have the treatment done, your given several options, all of which are down to yourselves, which suits best. I would say come and try it out.
When I saw my smile after my treatment, my first veneers, I was so pleased. I had been recommended so many different things, some of which are too expensive, some of which were too long-winded, but the veneers suited me so well and I felt really comfortable and relaxed. Mixed up with the crowns and the rest of my dentures, I was ready for anything. Really happy.”
Veneers are routinely used to fix
- Crooked teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Teeth that are too small or large
- Unwanted or uneven spaces
- Worn or chipped teeth
- Severely discoloured or stained teeth either because of root canaltreatment; stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discoloured the tooth
Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy. Because they are very thin and are held in place by a special, strong adhesive, very little preparation of the tooth is needed. Some types of veneers don’t need any preparation at all. They also last longer than alternative options such as composite bonding.
Getting a veneer usually requires two visits to complete the process with little or no anaesthesia required during the procedure.
On your first visit, some of the shiny, outer enamel surface of the tooth may be removed, to make sure that the veneer can be bonded permanently in place later. The amount of enamel removed is planned and kept as minimal as possible, to be the same as the thickness of the veneer to be fitted, so that the tooth stays the same size.
Once the tooth has been prepared, a mould or impression of the teeth is taken ready for the veneers to be made. The veneers are handcrafted by a dental laboratory. This will be given to the dental technician, along with any other information needed to make the veneer. The colour of the surrounding teeth is matched on a shade guide to make sure that the veneer will look entirely natural.
On the second visit the veneers will be bonded to the teeth with a bonding cement.
A final review appointment allows us to check how your gums are responding to the presence of your veneers and to check the veneer’s placement.

This lady had some failing veneers on her upper teeth and was very self conscious about her smile. All of the old restorations were removed and a combination of crowns and veneers were placed on her top teeth.
